Box Office Early Update: Despicable Me 2 grabs the winning pole

This post will be amended throughout the week, and information here will be collated and put in the box office results page next Sunday.

UPDATE #1: Despicable Me 2 is having a boost, earning $34.3 million on opening day. The Lone Ranger suffered from bad reviews, earning only $9.7 million. That’s almost 4 times less than Despicable me 2, which is a shame for the film. Meanwhile, Kevin hart: Let Me Explain is similiarly being well received, and from only less than a thousand theatres, is set to earn around $18-20 million by this weekend.
Based on current early numbers, Despicable Me 2 earned $4.7 million from early Thursday preview shows. In comparison, Monsters University grossed $2.6 million in the same timeframe. Lone Ranger was mostly affected by the onslaught of great summer movies which overperformed over the past few weeks, and could only earn $2 million during the same period. Check back here later for the opening day numbers when they are available. This number might be due to poor buzz, and bad reviews.
